Backpack Buddies Program

The Family Resource Center started the Backpack Buddies for students that have a need for food during the weekend.

This includes Spencer Co. students from elementary schools, middle school, and high school. The Center is asking for help from churches because it is very expensive to fund this program. However, these students would not have food for the weekend without it.

Elk Creek Baptist will be helping with this program from now until the end of the school year. If all of us at Elk Creek brought in just one food item each Sunday, that would feed at least six students. That's a good start don't you think? It costs about $6.00 to feed one child. You can bring your items in each Sunday and Drop them off outside the kitchen. If you would rather donate money; that will be fine as well, you can make the check payable to the Family Resource Center and give to Belinda Buchanan or Shawn Knapper.

The Center wants to encourage self-sufficiency and independence in the kids that are in this program. They ask that we only buy individual boxes and cans of food. The cans of food must have a pull top lid - as long as it does not have to be opened with a can-opener it is all right. Remember that some of these kids are kindergarteners. The food has to be able to be opened and prepared or cooked very easily.

A backpack is always sent home with two juice pouches/boxes, two cereals, two lunch items, three supper items, and some nutritious snacks.

Below is a list of some of the items you can buy:

  • Chicken Noodle Soup

  • Tomato Soup

  • Ravioli

  • Beefaroni

  • Spaghetti & Meatballs

  • Spaghetti-O’s

  • Vienna Sausage

***Please note that all items should come in a can with a Pop-Top Lid.***

Items Not To Bring
  • The Center is not sending items with Peanut Butter - Due to salmonella scare

  • Please, no tuna fish or canned meat, this apparently is not a big hit with the kids

  • No cookies or Pop tarts - Items must be non-perishable

If you have any questions, please contact Belinda Buchanan (502) 477-9080 or Shawn Knapper (502) 477-1147.

Thank you in advance for your support!
